JOHANNES HAILE (Photographer)

Born in 1927, Johannes Haile is one of the first Ethiopians to study photography in the United States at the University of Southern California in the early 1950s. He attended the NY School of Modern Photography and the University of Southen California (USC). During the 50s and 60s he served as an important LIN and AU photographer and covered not only stories of people in Africa but all over the world during his travels with a UN laisser-passer. One of his longer trips brought him to Europe, specifically Germany where he visited both East and West Germany before the wall of Berlin was built. His primary subject matter at the time was "Men and Women in Industry".

From the early 60s to 2006, Johannes Haile worked in his famous portrait studio under the Ethiopian Electric Company in Piassa, Addis Ababa. He then retired and has been busy downsizing his life and organizing his historic photos.
